Laminate countertops will always be less expensive or even comparable in price, but the materials and life expectancy will always be lower than granite too.

Grade – Laminates are manufactured in various grades based on their thickness and other attributes. Horizontal-grade laminate is usually the thickest and used in countertop applications. However, this type of laminate is typically more expensive and there are fewer choices available.
(If you’re pairing a farmhouse sink with a laminate countertop, you will have to use a topmount sink, since laminate countertops aren’t compatible with undermount sinks. )
Installing laminate flooring over carpet is not recommended in most installation situations. Since carpet is usually plush and soft, your laminate flooring would not have the support it needs to keep the locking system sturdy. If you are working with sturdy low pile carpeting, you can install laminate on top of it.
