Glass backsplash tiles might seem like an unusual choice for a kitchen area, but they are actually quite popular amongst people who spend a lot of time in the kitchen and prefer a backsplash that is easy to wipe off. Glass tiles are perfect for resisting spills and stains, and require little to no maintenance.
Since glass tile backsplashes are made of a non-porous material – namely glass – they don’t allow food stains and water splashes to penetrate the surface. The splash should complement the floor, cabinets and countertop. As an example, if a homeowner chooses a granite countertop that has a lot of visual movement (veining, color variation) they may want to design a backsplash that is more subdued, without as much visual activity.
You can achieve this look with any countertop material—quartz, granite, Corian, and laminate notwithstanding. On the other hand, matching backsplash to countertop is not a design requirement. In fact, you don’t have to use the same countertop and backsplash materials at all!
Left: This backsplash really didn’t need to turn the corner. It could’ve been left on the back wall of the kitchen. If you’re in a kitchen, and you’re doing the countertop-to-upper-cabinet-18”-high-backsplash, it’s best not to wrap that around to the side wall if you don’t need to.
The one spot where caulk, not grout, should be used is the seam between the countertop and the backsplash. The Tile Council of America suggests a 1/8-in. -wide caulk joint at the seam. Grout, like many types of stone, should be sealed to prevent stains and water infiltration.

Cabinets that will rest on top of the countertop (appliance garage, etc. ) must be installed after the new countertop is installed. Disconnect and remove all existing countertops, backsplashes, sinks and cooktops from cabinetry. (Removal of countertop and backsplash may not be required in all instances.
Backsplash tiles don’t need to be one color only because you can mix and match coordinating colors or purchase premade mosaic tile strips. You might choose a repeated tile color that matches your countertops but add other tile colors to coordinate with other elements of your room design.
