Why is a vanity called a vanity?

VANITY TABLE, BY ANY NAME, HAS LONG HISTORY. Today it is usually called a vanity table; in the 19th century, it was called a dressing table ; but in the 18th century, it was known as a toilet table. A mirror that could be tipped for a better view was attached to the top of the table by the 1750s.
