These yummy cupcakes are from Daisy Cafe and Cupcake in Madison, WI. The good people at Daisy treated our staff with these beautiful and delicious concoctions. The little Piggies are–as should be expected–full of bacon! But imagine our surprise when we bit into its snout. When you’re in Madison and want a sweet treat, try Daisy. But if you don’t think cupcakes are a complete meal, don’t worry, you can eat your veggies first. They’re at 2827 Atwood Ave, Madison, 608.241.2200.

This is a heartfelt tribute to all you backyard gardeners out there. These lovely, colorful tomatoes are from Rachel’s garden on Madison’s east side. What’s in your garden?

We enjoyed a wonderful day at the Linda and Gene Farley Center for Peace, Justice and Sustainability, for the dedication ceremony. Kudos to the Farley family for this gift to the progressive community. As you can see from the photos, some farmers brought out their produce for the buying pleasure of the guests. They are a reminder of why we chose food as an occupation and why we enjoy such bounty in this country. Thank you local farmers.

Love cukes? We love our local Wisconsin cucumbers so much that we bought a heap.

What’s your favorite summer vegetable? Yellow summer squash is a favorite of ours, especially when it’s local. We picked ours up from Tri-county auction in Dalton, WI just for your restaurant pleasure.

Each month at Golden Produce, we all get together, share a meal, celebrate birthdays and have fun. The eats this month were from one of our favorite coffee shops, Oasis/EVP in Fitchburg. We love those guys! And their potato salad and humongous sandwiches! It’s off of South Fish Hatchery, right across from another fave, The Roman Candle. Drop in and tell them Golden Produce sent you.

The boys at the school. This is a “trade” school in Havana, Cuba where young people not only learn a trade, but also build the classroom. It reminds us that there is a universal language for young men; and it’s hopeful.

Today is the first day of Spring. Let’s celebrate and EAT OUT. If you’re in Dane County, Wisconsin, there are lots of great restaurants and food carts to choose from. If you’re near Milwaukee, check out BEANS AND BARLEY on the east side. Writer Ann Patchett says it’s one of the reasons she loves visiting Wisconsin. Have a favorite eat-out place? Support them and spread the good news by posting here. Happy Spring!

We were walking around a back street area of Havana when we came across this local produce vendor. Reminds us of a very, very mini farmer’s market.

Photo taken on a mall in Havana, Cuba: If you live in Madison or any other college town, this scene is probably familiar; students strolling between classes, looking for diversions from their studies. The weather was beautiful in Havana, the music sublime and the books, well. old and of a particular political bent.

Have you seen the new issue of Madison Magazine? There are many great articles, but because we’re all about food here at R.E. Golden Produce, we loved the “Asian-Food Lover’s Guide” and also the small piece on page 82 about Herbes de Provence. Hey, we said, we’ve got that! You don’t have to make your own, we do the mixing right here. Just call us for any amount: a lil’ bit to a whole lot.

Congratulations to our friends at Manna Cafe on their new menu. Some of us at Golden Produce were lucky enough to be part of the appreciative dinner crowd trying out the delicious new offerings. Check them out at

The woman on the right is in charge of the organic farm, which grows a variety of produce and bananas. The man was our guide for the commune. He spoke English well and was able to answer our numerous questions; she spoke through an interpreter. We found many Cubans to be bi-lingual, if not even more languages.

Golden Produce owners joined UW-Madison alums on a cultural trip to Cuba in February 2013. Yes, it’s legal; we flew out of Miami for the 8 day tour of Cuban schools, medical centers and other places. One of our favorites was a worker’s cooperative that supports itself with an organic farm, a gourmet restaurant and small hotel for tourist. We spent the day at the commune and ate lunch at the Eco-restaurant, El Romero. It’s reclaimed land that is beautiful and productive.

The Crew at Golden Produce wish all of you a healthy and happy holiday. Thank you for all of your support and well wishes the past year. Robert and Barbara Golden.
