MCTS Drivers Unions Calls for a Strike, All Bus Service Suspended MILWAUKEE - As of 3 am Wednesday, July 1, 2015, all Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) bus service will be suspended because of a strike by the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 998. ATU leaders called for a work stoppage despite significant attempts and concessions from MCTS during a daylong negotiation session. The union’s decision means tens of thousands of people who rely on MCTS to get to work, sch. ool and doctor’s appointments will have to find other transportation. The strike will also shut down Summerfest service that tens of thousands of people rely on every day to get to the Big Gig. MCTS presented a contract proposal on Friday that would have increased bus drivers and mechanics pay in exchange for some health care concessions. The average MCTS bus driver will make more than $62,000 this year in salary and overtime. In an attempt to avoid a strike, MCTS made significant concessions to the union today, including: A matching $1,000 Flexible Spending Account for employees to help offset modest increases in healthcare costs. The previous proposal was $500. Capping the amount of part-time drivers MCTS will hire. Some flexibility for how mechanics use their personal time. Despite numerous recent statements from union leaders that their contract dispute was not over money, the union came to the bargaining table today to ask for $8 million in increased wages.

President Murphy calls for special election for 11th District Council seat Common Council President Michael J. Murphy this morning called for an August 18, 2015 special election for the 11th Aldermanic District seat left vacant after the sudden passing last month of Alderman Joe Dudzik. . President Murphy made the special election announcement at the end of today’s meeting of the full Common Council at City Hall. The meeting began with a minute of silence in memory of Alderman Dudzik, who died in a May 22 motorcycle accident on W. Morgan Ave. near S. 74th St. “Knowing how much Alderman Dudzik truly loved serving his district and his constituents, I believe he would want the election to take place as soon as is reasonable, so service and representation can continue as needed,” President Murphy said. Any person intending to run for the 11th District Aldermanic seat should register as a candidate by filing a Campaign Registration Statement with the City of Milwaukee Election Commission, City Hall, Room 501. According to state statute, the circulation of nomination papers can begin, effective today. The deadline for submitting nomination papers to the city Election Commission is 5 p.m. on June 23, 2015. A successor shall be elected to serve the remainder of the unexpired term which will expire on April 18, 2016. State law requires a person running for an aldermanic seat to reside in that district on the date of the election. There is no requirement for a person to live in the district while seeking office, including while circulating nomination papers. If there are more than two official candidates, a primary election for the seat will be held on July 21, with the top two vote-getters moving on to the final election, scheduled for Tuesday, August 18. Additional information on running for public office is available on the Election Commission website at www.milwaukee.gov/election.

Just for the record. When I arrived at the park on Sunday at 5am, there was still a lot of garbage from the night before. Our port of johns that were reserved for our event, had been broken into and used. Our sink water and soap were emptied. And we cleaned up before our event. The county was to provide us with garbage bags for the trash cans, they were to make pick ups throughout the day. Once the county brought us bags around 2pm, our volunteers scrabbled to clean up, but . by then the garbage cans were over filled, but we emptied them. After the festival, we cleaned up, left it better than we found it. Even during the storm, with the wind blowing strong, our volunteers continued to clean the park. When branches star, ted breaking over head, we had no choice but to stop bagging. One of my staff spoke with one of the county employees who said that the county will gather our bags and dump them. Unfortunately, the storm continued to blow and they were unable to collect the bags. I can only imagine that animals got into the garbage and the winds carried the debris. Our apologies to Bay View and Milwaukee County Park.
